In March 2024, we gave three performances of one of the great works of the North-European Baroque, Buxtehude’s supreme passiontide masterpiece “Membra Jesu Nostri”: in Gentofte, Budolfi Domkirke in Aalborg, and in the historic baroque church of Garnisons in central Copenhagen.

Ensemble Passio draws on many of Europe’s finest instrumentalists and singers, delivering performances of outstanding musical and dramatic vitality.

 

Ensemble Passio are a group of like-minded musicians, blending the finest ensemble skills with the passion and nuance of soloists. Our playing is informed by the historical performance practices of our chosen music, blended with outstanding modern virtuosity and plenty of spontaneity. We match precision with dramatic flair!

 

Musical Director - James Sherlock

James Sherlock, Founder and Director of Ensemble Passio, conducts many of the outstanding choirs and orchestras of Europe. He has guest conducted Tenebrae, Voces 8, the radio choirs of Latvia, BBC and Danish Radio and Ars Nova, as well as most of the major Nordic orchestras, specialising in repertoire from the baroque through to the present day.

His formative years were spent as a keyboard player in groups such as the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightment, the English Baroque Soloists, as well as the London Symphony and Philharmonic Orchestras. He also worked closely as vocal coach and accompanist to many of today’s finest singers, in recital and on the operatic stage.

His founding vision for Ensemble Passio is a group that delivers performances of dramatic and musical intensity, with likeminded musicians, informed by our best understanding of historically accurate performance traditions, and blended with outstanding modern virtuosity.
